Water Management and Tree System Design/Install

SLR was hired to assist on the design and installation of tree/shrub, swale, berm and pond systems to improve hydrology, and climate resilience of farms across the USA (e.g., Arkansas, Idaho, Michigan, New York, etc.).
Additionally, SLR helped with generating tree species lists for multi-story plantings, social media, coordinating projects, and assisting with logistics.

SLR has assisted in 9 large-scale water management design and installation projects across the US for RAD.
Sun Hazel Farm (NY, USA)
Land Purchase and Farm Management
SLR oversaw the purchase of Sun Hazel Farm in Cobleskill, NY, and is now managing it. This is the largest contiguous hazelnut planting in the North East and is an open-air pollinated hazelnut, mass-selected breeding site as well as a future source for marketable hazelnuts. Together with friends and partners, we took a beat up piece of land that had been in GMO corn and are regenerating it with hybrid hazelnut shrubs, pollinator habitat, soil remediation, and cover cropping.
We aim to have it be a future source for locally adapted, cold hardy, precocious, hazelnut genetics that can go out to nurseries in order to help the regional climate resilient and nutrient-dense perennial food industry.

Ecosystem Restoration Communities

Prior to the formation of SLR, Ben spent his time working as an educator and facilitator on the Ecosystem Restoration Design course. He also edited videos, found context-specific consultants and volunteers for international ecosystem restoration efforts such as (Contour Lines Co (Guatemala), SEKEM (Egypt), Mainsprings (Tanzania), Virsoleil, Boma Ikolojia (Kenya), Sandele Foundation (The Gambia).

Forest Foods & Farm Development Consulting

After working together at a Dutch Ecosystem Restoration non-profit, Reforesters hired SLR to find land upon which to install one of the largest mixed species agroforestry and swale/berm/pond water management systems in North America.

As the newly planted hazelnuts, chestnuts, persimmon, paw paw, and thornless honey locusts establish, SLR helps develop Reforesters Brooklyn into a commercial space for forest foods and human health. SLR is also designing and installing a dense and native Miyawaki forest on the farm while assiting with R&D.
